How to Register at a Chinese Hospital with a Passport

Passport registration is possible in many places, but it is often the exact point where app and mini-program workflows break for foreigners.

Practical steps

Use these steps to understand the usual route before you choose a hospital, clinic, app, or request personal help.

Step 1

Use the same identity throughout the visit

Hospital registration is tied to real-name identity. Use the same passport name order, passport number, and phone number across booking, payment, check-in, tests, reports, invoices, and follow-up.

Step 2

Try official online registration early

Search for the hospital official app or WeChat mini-program. Some systems support passport registration, while first-time foreign users may need manual review. If you need a specific date, start 1-3 days early rather than on visit day.

Step 3

Use manual channels if the app fails

If the app only accepts Chinese ID numbers or rejects your name format, try the hospital phone line, international department, VIP desk, or onsite manual registration window. Do not keep paying through unofficial resellers.

Step 4

Bring the original passport to every step

You may need the passport at registration, payment, department check-in, imaging, lab tests, report printing, pharmacy, or invoice desk. Screenshots or copies may not be enough.

Step 5

Ask how follow-up and reports are tied to your ID

Before leaving, confirm whether future appointments, report access, and invoice pickup require the same passport number and phone account used at first registration.

What to prepare

  • Passport
  • Mobile number
  • WeChat account if available
  • Payment method
  • Chinese address or hotel address if requested

Common pitfalls

  • Entering passport names in the wrong order
  • Using a different phone number for registration and payment
  • Assuming WeChat login equals completed hospital registration
  • Forgetting the original passport on visit day

Who this helps

Good fit

  • Foreigners without a Chinese ID card
  • Users blocked by hospital apps or mini-programs
  • People preparing for public hospital or VIP clinic visits

Not for

  • Emergency department registration questions
  • Bypassing hospital policy
  • Cases where the hospital has already refused foreign passport registration

When to get help

  • You cannot pass ID verification
  • The hospital app has no passport option
  • You need a VIP or international department route
  • You need instructions translated into English
